How to get to the far north without trying an ancestral means of transport. So let’s go for a sleigh ride pulled by dogs. I was quite reluctant to make this kind of choice regarding the condition of dogs but this reluctance is quickly dissipated. Indeed, dogs are not mistreated as may be the case for other activities involving animals. And then because dogs do not wait until someone has chosen … to be able to run and exercise. It’s pretty impressive to hear the barking of the pack as you approach the sled. Once started on sent the power and you usually have your feet on the brake. Choose that dogs don’t like too much and you like it when you go too slow.
After the effort it is time for comfort for the dogs. A little taste, rolls in the snow to cool off and of course a few hugs as a thank you.
Then we hunted the northern lights. An incredible phenomenon resulting from the activity of the sun and the terrestrial magnetic field. To be able to observe them, you must be lucky enough to have a clear sky and as little light pollution as possible. Unfortunately the first condition was not on our side. So we were unable to observe magnificent dazzling green dances dancing in the sky. We observed some whitish spots (quite difficult to distinguish from a cloud). The green color is visible thanks to a camera, but nothing with the naked eye unfortunately. So we sink deeper into the land to escape the clouds in the hope of seeing more. The night is freezing, so we decide to make a fire to keep us warm. Nothing better than a small campfire in the middle of nowhere to wait for the dawn. As we warm up, I quickly turn on my headlamp to observe the surroundings. And there, surprise. 2 bright points in the distance on the crest line around us. He’s probably a wolf, but not very sure. So we decide to check from time to time if these points are still there, if they have moved and especially if there are others. A lone wolf is not dangerous, but a wolf pack can be.
Minutes pass, we hear noises all around us and feel a presence. We are much less reassured and we check again. This time if we are surrounded by a herd of reindeer. This confirms the probable presence of a wolf in the heights, which brought the herd down into the valley.
Despite our patience in the freezing night, luck is not on our side and the overcast weather does not allow us to observe this magnificent spectacle. Never mind…
